Rules for Completion of a Foreign Language Course

 COURSE COMPLETION

guidelines set out in the UJK Study Regulations

  1. The student is required to:
    1. attend classes provided for in the study programme;
    2. obtain credits for all courses in accordance with the relevant curriculum cycle provided for in the study programme;
    3. comply with the attendance requirements established by the academic teacher conducting the classes included in the study programme;
    4. complete courses and take examinations within the prescribed deadlines.
  2. Course completion shall be granted by the academic teacher conducting the classes. The rules for passing a course shall be determined by the academic teacher responsible for the course.
  3. The deadlines for course completion shall be set by the academic teacher responsible for the course, taking into account the detailed organisation of classes. The student may obtain a course completion before the scheduled date, subject to agreeing the date with the academic teacher responsible for the course.
  4. The student is required to attend classes designated as compulsory.
  5. One unjustified absence per semester is permitted in classes in which attendance is compulsory. Any subsequent absences must be justified to the academic teacher conducting the classes.
  6. Circumstances justifying an absence from classes include significant unforeseen events, in particular the student’s illness.

 

RULES FOR COMPLETION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES

  1. The student is required to enrol in a foreign language course before the beginning of the semester in which, in accordance with the study programme at their Faculty, language education commences.
  2. The student is required to familiarise themselves with the study programme and the course description for the foreign language course of their choice, which contains learning outcomes, assessment methods and other information relevant to the delivery of the course (information available on the Foreign Language Centre website).
  3. A student enrolled in a foreign language course is required to attend the course regularly.
  4. The student is required to justify any absence within one week of the reason for the absence ceasing to apply, unless otherwise determined by the academic teacher.
  5. A change of group is possible during the first month of the course upon submission of an application by the student to the Head of the Foreign Language Centre.
  6. The student is required to have the textbook and any supplementary materials recommended by the academic teacher and to bring them to classes. Where a specific online platform is used for the classes, the student is required to have an access code for the platform.
  7. At the beginning of the semester in which language education commences, the academic teacher conducting the classes shall inform students of the requirements for passing the foreign language course. If the student is absent from the first class, they are required to contact the academic teacher regarding the requirements for passing the course. The office hours of academic teachers are available on the Foreign Language Centre website.
  8. A student who has been granted an Individual Study Organisation (ISO) is required to inform the academic teacher of this at the beginning of each semester and familiarise themselves with the rules for passing the course.
  9. The scope of material required for course completion shall be consistent with the course description, the study programme and the academic teacher’s own teaching programme.
  10. The assessment of the learning outcomes expected to be achieved in a given semester shall comprise the following elements:
  1. written assignments and/or
    2. oral presentations and/or
    3. other elements that may be assessed by the academic teacher conducting the classes.

Grading scale:
91–100% – very good (5.0)
81–90% – good plus (4.5)
71–80% – good (4.0)
61–70% – satisfactory plus (3.5)
51–60% – satisfactory (3.0)

  1. The student shall be entitled to two opportunities to retake the course completion assessment. The date of the resit shall be determined by the academic teacher.
  2. A student who does not take the test on the first scheduled date and does not have the required justification shall receive an unsatisfactory grade. The student is required to take the test on the date specified by the academic teacher conducting the classes.
  3. A first-cycle student, a second-cycle student and a long-cycle Master’s student may be exempt from the final examination if they obtain a grade of at least 4.5 in each semester. The student shall inform the academic teacher conducting the foreign language course accordingly.
  4. The student shall have the right to review their assessed work and discuss their errors during classes or consultations (to be agreed with the academic teacher).
  5. Upon completion of the foreign language course, the student is required to take an examination in the foreign language:
  1. First-cycle studies – minimum level B2
    2. Second-cycle studies – level B2+
    3. Long-cycle Master’s studies – level B2+
  1. A prerequisite for admission to the examination is obtaining course completion for all semesters of foreign language education. The final assessment of the student’s oral proficiency in the foreign language shall take place during the final semester of the foreign language course in the form of an oral test conducted in pairs before the teacher, based on topics made available in advance. The general thematic areas shall be standardised for all candidates. The topic for discussion shall be selected by drawing lots. During the discussion, the candidates shall express their opinions and use arguments for and against.
